Barstow to Sedona (Day 2) August 24, 2019

Okay folks I realize I should have started with a little background yesterday. Briefly: Beth has a family reunion in Lake Placid NY mid September. She has always wanted to drive cross country. I suggested we drive to the reunion.

Here is a map of day one:

[I stole the map idea from our friends Jeff and Suzie]

Here we are - day two of our trip. It is hard to believe we only left home yesterday morning. I feel like I have been gone a week. (In a good way).

Another easy drive today. We listened to a great book on tape, "The Art of Racing in the Rain". A great family story from the point of view of the family dog. A few parts made me cry. Beth says they are turning it into a movie. Listening to books really makes the driving go fast.

Themes from today: wide open desert as far as you could see; cactus; long freight trains; gazillions of semis on the road.

Stopped for lunch in Flagstaff, AZ. Nice town. Very green. Cute downtown. Old Route 66 goes right thru.

I gotta digress for a second. I'm washing my hands after lunch. Is anyone else having issues with the motion activated soap dispensers? I can't get anything out. I pull my hands away and a big dollop of soap ends up on the floor.

Headed for Sedona early afternoon. Beautiful clouds beckoned.

We did not know what to expect in Sedona; jaw dropping beauty. Incredible majestic red rock formations.

My pictures don't do Sedona justice. It is breathtaking.

We spent a little while exploring Sedona. Way too touristy. I managed to find a few brethren (bears).

Had a nice Italian dinner near our hotel. Sat at the bar and chatted up a couple from Las Vegas.

Here is the map from day two:

Tomorrow: spending a second day in Sedona. We plan to hike early in the day to avoid the heat.

Love,

Beth and the bear

  1. I hope you had a good journey from Sedona, just south of Flagstaff. We live about 1 1/2 hours away from both. I hope you don't have any difficult situations on the road. Stay out of the way of the racing semis on highway 40! Aunt Jeanne

  2. The soap dispenser requires excellent coordination and timing. Mine ends up on the floor too. Happy trails.
