We decided it was safe to stay nearish to the coast despite the approach of Hurricane Dorian. We made a stop in Savannah, Georgia (recommended by Suzie and Jeff who did a road trip like this a few years ago). We were not disappointed. Savannah is charming.
I ran into the Weather Channel crew in Savannah. She told me they were instructed not to smile in photos or on camera.
We had a nice biscuit and gravy lunch and headed on northeast to Durham. We were a bit worried about traffic from the forced evacuations in Florida and because it was the Monday of Labor Day Weekend. It was not too bad except near Charleston S.C. where they would not let traffic go east to the coast.
We were tired. The drive was long.
I stopped for a big cup of folgers coffee from Dairy Queen. We soldiered on.
We arrived in Durham about 4:15 pm, after leaving this morning at 6 am. Great to see our old friend Elizabeth Livingston. She and Beth worked together at SF General in the 1980s. Elizabeth is a professor and OBGYN MD at Duke Medical School. Happy to see each other.
Elizabeth took us on a tour of Duke:
Back to Elizabeth's house for a fantastic steak dinner.
Elizabeth was a great host. So good to see another old friend. We have stayed one step ahead of the storm. We hardly thought about it tonight. Off to Washington DC tomorrow.
Love,
Beth and Bear
