Breaking news today in the New York Times: "Help! There’s a Bear in my Airbnb" [subheadline - Why do people want their bear pictures so badly?]

Beth was road weary this morning before our drive to Maine

She felt better after a hearty breakfast at Colbys

It is a different life we are living on the road. Constantly moving. Only the truck as our home. Today we argued about who’s behaving badly. Since I am writing this I get the last word: BETH!

We left Portsmouth, destination Stonington, Maine - on Penobscot Bay. We had never even heard of it til yesterday. We talked to a man [Rick] in the information booth in Portsmouth about where to find a rustic place in Maine. He mentioned that his sister had gone too Stonington. We investigated it, as thoroughly as you can on the internet, and decided on it.

This was my first trip to Maine. Everything I know about the state, I learned from reading my kids "One Morning in Maine" by Robert McCloskey.

We stopped in Portland, Maine for a couple of hours. Interesting city. We liked it.

We saw lots of chubby people from a cruise ship walking around.

I had to get more lobster. This grouchy lady cooked some up for me

I am eating so much lobster my skin might turn orange like the time I took tanning pills in Vancouver as a youngster. If this much lobster doesn’t give me Gout, maybe I don't get it anymore.

I saw what I think was a typical new englander. He had bushy eyebrows like a sea captain and he had a little waddle in his walk.

I had a romantic vision of what I wanted Maine,  based on One Morning in Maine. I wanted to see seashore and smooth rounded rocks covered with seaweed. Folks, we found it.

Stonington is the place. My vision became real. What a pleasure. Off the beaten track. Delightful. It is at the southern tip of Deer Isle. A lobster fishing village.

We had dinner at Aragosta. Great food and ambience. We finally got to sit at the counter, after waiting about an hour. Good company with Karen and Chris (from Manhattan) Dell'Arte Opera Ensemble

and Lily and Ron (retired General Surgeon) from Hood River, Baja & a mysterious island near Stonington

and Pam (our local photographer)

Off to bed. We'll try to get up at 4 am to watch the lobstermen (and women) go to sea. Tomorrow maybe we'll have CLAM CHOWDER FOR LUNCH!

Love,

bear and Beth

  1. I’ve been to Stonington and Deer Isle- some former SF neighbors had a ‘cottage’ there. It’s beautiful. Enjoying the blog. Eat a lobster or eight for me, Tara
