A planned day two in Montreal with Meyer. He had planned to travel with us for a few days after Lake Placid. Montreal made sense as a destination.
Beth worries that I am spending too much time in front of screens: Blogging, NYT Crossword puzzle, and NYT Spelling Bee. She might be right; but, I am having fun with all three. I am on a 55 day streak finishing the NYT Crossword. At least one person reading this cares. You know who you are.
Beth and Meyer took a long walk up Mont Royal. They enjoyed the view
We met for lunch at Schwartz's Deli. It seemed like the most popular restaurant in Montreal. We enjoyed poutine and Montreal smoked meat, which is like pastrami-ish corned beef. Poutine is french fries with cheese curd smothered in gravy.
I just saw another A&W root beer store - open 24 hours. Who in the hell needs a root beer float at three in the morning?
I found some Mackintosh's Toffee.
This is a Canadian treat in my family. My mother was born in Canada. We have lots of relatives here. When I was a child, my mom brought home this Toffee whenever she returned from a trip to Canada. It is hard as a rock. It may require a trip to the dentist after eating. You have to whack the bar on something hard to break it up into small bite sized pieces. It has a rich buttery sweet flavor. I bought a bunch to bring home for the family.
We had another classic French Bistro dinner tonite at Modavie. We ate more foie gras, Salad Nicoise, Mussels and Steak Frite. There was live jazz.
In Canada when you pay your check with a credit card, the waiter hands you a little machine. You put your card in and add the tip with the waiter looking over your shoulder. Awkward.
Beth had a good observation: Canada is really good but it doesn’t make a big deal about itself.
An observation I made today - what I like about Beth: she wears no make up and she doesn’t die her hair to try to look blonde. She is authentic.
We'll take Meyer to the airport tomorrow. Beth and I will head to Toronto.
Love,
bear, Beth and Meyer
