Woke up this morning and went to Honda dealer to get new windshield wipers for the truck. I bought cheap wipers on the internet six months ago and installed them myself. Twice while driving in the rain, one of the wipers started coming off. Scary. Glad to have them fixed. Learned a little lesson about saving money buying stuff on the internet.
Spent an hour in the backyard talking with Greg, catching up and reminiscing. We went to law school together. Greg moved (back) to Wisconsin in 1992. We rarely get the opportunity to sit down and talk. We talked about music and the SF Bay Area. We both fondly recalled late night trips to Flint's to get ribs.
Wisconsin's state capital is on an isthmus. We had to look at a picture to remember what that was. We all must have learned the word in Geography class in middle school.
Sandi told us about a local comedian Michael Feldman. He had a great line: the trouble with Jewish men is that they all think they’re funny
We toured the Olbrich Botanical Gardens where Sandi volunteers. Beautiful
Beth and Sandi did a little Tai chi chen in front of the Thai Pavilion
Greg was not very impressed.
We stopped for frozen custard (a Wisconsin treat) at Michaels - WOW!
We walked thru State capital. No metal detectors when we went in. Suprising.
I almost took a picture of the bathroom it was so ornate (no pic - sorry).
We walked down State street from the State Capitol. It reminded me of what Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley must have looked like in the 1950s. Clean.
We stopped for a pitcher of spotted cow beer at the "Union" (Student Union).
Greg told us that he beat, Wisconsin native and Olympic Gold Medalist, Eric Heiden in a 25 yard speed skating match when they were nine years old. (Eric tripped over someone’s skate).
Dinner at home. Greg and Sandi served BBQ pork medallions, salad and apple pie. One last true story about Greg. He beat Redd Foxx in a poker game in Las Vegas in 1978. Greg had four kings. He told Redd he had two pair - kings and kings. Redd Foxx laughed hard.
We had a great time exploring Madison, Wisconsin. Greg and Sandi were great hosts. Madison is a wonderful city. Relatively small (200k) urban but no skyscrapers, no traffic. Interesting college town. The campus is huge and beautiful. Along the banks of Lake Mendota. It was a big football weekend v. Michigan. You could feel the energy on campus and at the Union.
On to Minneapolis tomorrow to visit Ed and Mary Bock.
Love,
bear and Beth
