The day started out badly. We had breakfast at Denny’s. We needed to stop. Denny's was the best choice from some mediocre diners available, at the exit we chose at random.
I felt sorry for the waitresses. Kind of a depressing place for me. A lot Lonely old people. I had a bad attitude. I had too many judgments about all the people working and eating at Denny's. Beth gave our waitress a $10 tip on our $21 bill. I felt a little better.
We experienced a storm (times 3): (1) there were dark clouds out and rain on the road; (2) there was a sandstorm and thunderstorm in Lonesome Dove, the book we are listening to. Gus, Call and the crew spent an uncomfortable night on horseback on their cattle drive; and (3) Beth and I got in a big fight over something stupid. (Isn't it always like that?)
Then, Beth had to have a donut when we saw Dunkin' Donuts. She took one bite. It was so bad, she had to spit it out. At that point in the day, the day was all D: Denny's, Donut --- Drek (look it up in a Yiddish dictionary).
We arrived at Ed and Mary's early afternoon. What a ray of sunshine. The end of the storm. [I forgave Beth for being an $%$#^@! so that we could get along while visiting Ed and Mary. Don't worry, Beth won't read this for a few days.] The photos will be better today because Ed took some of them.
Ed is an Artist
and Mary is an Attorney. We met them when they came to California every summer to attend a seminar with my parents in Berkeley. I remember fondly, the dinners we all had, sitting at the GIANT white table in my parents old dining room. Many people reading this will remember eating dinner at that table.
Ed and Mary live in an old Cotswaldian Tudor home in a hip area of Minneapolis. They took us on a long walk around their neighborhood and Lake Harriet.
We are spending the night in Ed's studio.
They cooked us a delicious meal. Ed smoked ribs. Exquisite. We called my mom, Phyllis, and had a wonderful group chat.
We got to see Fluffy, Ed's pet alligator who died in 1983. Ed has him in the freezer. No I am not making this up. [photo simulation]
We had a great night with Ed and Mary. They helped us plan out our route from here.
After one more day here, touring Minneapolis, we are probably going to the Badlands and then Yellowstone. We will skip Glacier NP for now (we think).
Love,
bear and Beth
