We left Kat and Tom's Middlebury, Vermont farmhouse this morning
and drove to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Portsmouth is just across the river from Maine, on Maine's southern border. Short drive for us - 183 Miles today + 4254 = 4437 total
Gentle drive out of Vermont. Mostly two lane roads. Lots of mountains, river valleys, and teeny little towns.
I have noticed that you can get away with driving about ten miles over the speed limit. I am good with that. We are not in a hurry.
Fall is beginning. We are starting to see the leaves change color.
Portsmouth is a cute little town. Right on the water.
Chowder and lobster rolls for lunch at River House. Then I had a 2 pound lobster as an afternoon snack. Satisfied my craving.
Simple dinner at Flatbread, a local pizza/salad place.
Staying at the Sailmaker's House in Portsmouth. Mark Twain quote in the hall:
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
Off to somewhere else in Maine tomorrow. Still weighing Camden v. Stonington v. Bar Harbor. We'll decide in the morning. We plan to spend a few nights in Maine and then head to Lake Placid for Beth's family reunion.
Sorry for the boring blog tonight. Portsmouth was uninspiring.
Love,
bear and Beth
