259 Miles today from Durham to DC. total to date: 2413 + 587 + 498 + 259= 3757 (for Ferg - who I know is counting)
Ok - day 12 of drunk blogging (did I just admit that?). I am having a good time doing this despite that I do it after dinner; after having had a few. I held back for years because I had to have my mind together for work. That is all over. I get to let my hair down (pun intended).
The drive today was relatively short and easy. We saw the aftermath of a few accidents. I wish to NEVER have to get my insurance card out of the glove box this whole trip. No accidents; no tickets PLEASE!
Arrived in Washington D.C just after noon. I am seeing a lot of men in suits. Nice lunch at a vegetarian taco place advertising farm to taco.
After lunch, we checked out the Lincoln Memorial
The WWII Memorial
And the Washington Memorial (looking like a lit candle)
Then, Beth walked around town while I went to the Smithsonian Museum of American History. I like to look at old historical stuff. One of my favorite TV shows is American Pickers.
I had to send Peg (now working as an organizer for SEIU) pictures of Harry Bridges and
A picture of an Immigrant tailor's sewing machine and scissors.
For those of you who don't know, my grandfather (a tailor) immigrated from Russia to escape the Pogroms. He was a union organizer who settled in SF, participated in the General Strike in the 1930s, and likely knew Harry Bridges, the leader of the longshoreman.
I only saw a few floors of the museum. A couple of things I noticed:
Maybe our president will see what is on display (wishful thinking):
Beth hit one out of the park tonight for dinner. We ate at Filomena. An Italian restaurant in Georgetown. Huge delicious portions. I could not eat it all. I brought home leftovers. I cant count on one hand, the times that has happened in my whole life!
Great Service from Nico
I could not resist having dessert - A spumone/canneloni cake served with amaretto AND sambucca over coffee beans.
I called my mom today. So good to talk to her. I really appreciate having her in my life. Another blessing.
Thomas: we are thinking about you. Hang in there.
Beth and I are still talking to each other. A real accomplishment, after 11 days in each other's grill.
One more day in Washington D.C. tomorrow. After that, I think we'll head to Connecticut or New York for a night.
Love,
Bear and Beth

Congrats for staying ahead of Dorian. Your being in Washington D.C. reminds me that there is still so much to hold onto and fight for.
