Second Day with Laura and Fred in Jacksonville (Day 10) September 1, 2019

Spent the night with Laura and Fred. Lovely accommodations. They could not be more gracious hosts. We have been very fortunate. We are blessed with very good & generous friends.

Here is the map from yesterday:

Fred took me to the local club (Ponte Vedra Club) this morning for a workout. I rode the stationary bike for over an hour, sat in the jacuzzi and had a steam. Nice to get some exercise.

Beth and Laura  walked, went to church and monitored blood pressures there.

Laura and Fred took us for a fancy buffet lunch at the same club. Prime rib, prawns, snow crab and the works. Like a good Las Vegas buffet. I had a bloody mary and ate way too much.

After lunch we took a drive to the town of St. Augustine. The oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. Very quaint.

Laura and Fred treated us to a delicious fish dinner at  Palm Valley Fish Camp. Blackened snapper with tasso gravy and collard greens. Octopus salad. Local hot sauces. Great California Pinot. Memorable evening.

Back to the house. More wine. Fun catching up and reminiscing about old times.

All day, in the background,  we discussed Hurricane Dorian. We monitored the weather channel. Ferocious storm! 185 MPH winds! etc. We saw businesses boarding up in St. Augustine.

In the afternoon, they announced that Ponte Vedra, where Laura and Fred live, is under a mandatory evacuation order for 8 am tomorrow morning.

We had concerned calls, emails and texts from Thomas and Peg. How could we stay on the east coast with this impending Category 5 hurricane approaching. Are we crazy? GET OUT! Go West!

We are taking the storm very seriously. We'll make a safe choice in the morning. Can we safely continue up the coast ahead of the slow moving hurricane? Should we immediately head west?

To be continued.

Love,

Bear and Beth

  1. Having been through several typhoons in Hong Kong and one hurricane in Cabo (yes, they are the same, just different hemispheres) I can tell you they are no fun. Just book it as fast as you can Northward!
